These are the consequences of sleeping with the… See more

The image is shocking on purpose.
Top: Crusty, flaky eyelashes. Bottom: A magnified, alien-looking "worm" with 8 legs and claws.

Your brain immediately thinks: _"That thing is living in my eyelashes?? Because I fell asleep with mascara??"_

Let’s get the truth out first: *That "worm" is real. It’s called _Demodex_. And almost every adult on earth has it.*

Sleeping with makeup doesn’t _cause_ Demodex. But sleeping with makeup CAN make the problem 10x worse and lead to the crusty eyelashes in the top photo.

This is the full, no-gross-outs-unnecessary guide to what’s happening, why it happens, and how to stop it.

---

*PART 1: WHAT IS THAT "WORM" IN THE PHOTO?*

The bottom image is a *Demodex mite*. There are 2 types that live on humans:
**Type** **Where It Lives** **Size**
**Demodex folliculorum** Hair follicles, especially eyelashes 0.3-0.4 mm
**Demodex brevis** Oil glands in skin 0.2-0.3 mm
*5 Facts About Demodex:*
1. *Everyone has them.* 100% of adults over 18 have some. They’re part of your skin microbiome.
2. *You get them as a baby.* Probably from your mom during breastfeeding or close contact.
3. *They’re harmless... usually.* They eat dead skin cells and oil. They come out at night to mate.
4. *They don’t have anus.* They eat all night and die, releasing bacteria inside the follicle. Gross but true.
5. *You can’t see them without a microscope.* The photo is magnified 100x.

So the "worm" isn’t from sleeping with makeup. It’s always been there.

*PART 2: SO WHY ARE THE EYELASHES CRUSTY IN THE TOP PHOTO?*

That top image shows *Blepharitis + Demodex Overgrowth + Makeup Buildup.*

This is what happens when you sleep with makeup on, especially eye makeup:

*The 4-Step Disaster:*
*Step 1: You sleep with mascara/eyeliner*
Makeup mixes with oil, dead skin, and dirt from the day.

*Step 2: It clogs eyelash follicles*
Your oil glands can’t drain. Bacteria grows.

*Step 3: Demodex mites multiply*
They LOVE oil and debris. With makeup on, they have a buffet. Population explodes.

*Step 4: Inflammation + Crust*
Your body reacts. You get itching, redness, and that white/yellow flaky "dandruff" stuck to lashes. That’s what you see in the photo.

*Medical name*: _Demodex blepharitis_ or _anterior blepharitis_

*PART 3: 7 CONSEQUENCES OF SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP ON*

This isn’t just about "bad skin." It’s about eyes, aging, and infections.

*1. DEMODEX OVERGROWTH & BLEPHARITIS*
Symptoms: Itchy eyes, burning, crusty lashes in morning, red eyelid margins.
This is the #1 consequence shown in the photo.

*2. CLOGGED PORES & ACNE*
Makeup + oil + dead skin sits for 8 hours.
Result: Blackheads, whiteheads, cystic acne, especially on cheeks and forehead.

*3. PREMATURE AGING*
Free radicals from pollution stick to makeup. They sit on your skin all night breaking down collagen.
Result: Dull skin, fine lines, loss of elasticity. One night = one week of aging.

*4. EYE INFECTIONS*
Styes, conjunctivitis "pink eye", corneal ulcers.
Mascara wands and old makeup carry bacteria. Sleeping with it pushes bacteria into your eye.

*5. DRY, BRITTLE LASHES & LASH LOSS*
Mascara makes lashes stiff. You rub your eyes in sleep. Lashes break and fall out.
Takes 6-8 weeks to grow back.

*6. DULL, DEHYDRATED SKIN*
Your skin repairs and hydrates at night. Makeup blocks that process.
You wake up with "tired" skin even after 8 hours sleep.

*7. ALLERGIC REACTIONS*
Fragrances and preservatives in makeup cause contact dermatitis when left on too long.
Red, itchy, swollen eyelids.

*PART 4: IS DEMODEX DANGEROUS?*

For 90% of people: *No.* It’s normal.

For 10% of people: *Yes, if it overgrows.*
Risk factors for overgrowth:
- Sleeping in makeup
- Not washing face properly
- Oily skin
- Weak immune system
- Age 50+
- Rosacea

*Signs of Demodex overgrowth:*
- Severe itching at night
- Eyelashes falling out
- Red, scaly eyelids
- Feels like "something crawling" on skin

*Treatment*: Prescription tea tree oil cleansers, prescription drops, eyelid scrubs. See an eye doctor or dermatologist.

*PART 5: THE 5-MINUTE NIGHTTIME ROUTINE THAT PREVENTS ALL OF THIS*

You don’t need 10 products. You need consistency.

*STEP 1: REMOVE MAKEUP - 2 MINUTES*
Use micellar water, cleansing balm, or oil cleanser.
*Key*: Hold cotton pad on eye for 10 seconds, then wipe down. Don’t rub.
Double cleanse if you wore heavy makeup: oil cleanser → water cleanser.

*STEP 2: WASH FACE - 1 MINUTE*
Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Wash eyelid margins too.

*STEP 3: EYELID HYGIENE - 1 MINUTE*
If you’re prone to crust: Use diluted baby shampoo or lid scrub pads on lash line. This kills excess Demodex.

*STEP 4: MOISTURIZE - 1 MINUTE*
Light moisturizer so skin can repair overnight.

*Total: 5 minutes.* Less time than scrolling TikTok.

*PART 6: WHAT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE CRUSTY LASHES?*

Don’t panic. Here’s the 14-day reset:

*Days 1-3*: Stop all eye makeup. Warm compress 10 min, 2x/day.
*Days 4-7*: Add lid scrubs morning and night. Use preservative-free artificial tears.
*Days 8-14*: If not better, see eye doctor. They may prescribe metronidazole gel or tea tree wipes.

*DO NOT*: Pull at crusts. Use old mascara. Share eye makeup.

*PART 7: MYTHS ABOUT DEMODEX AND MAKEUP*

*Myth 1: "Demodex means I’m dirty"*
False. Clean people have them too. It’s about oil, not dirt.

*Myth 2: "I can get rid of them forever"*
No. You manage the population. They’ll always come back a little.

*Myth 3: "Natural makeup is safe to sleep in"*
No. Anything that blocks pores will cause problems.

*Myth 4: "Only women get this"*
Men get it too. Anyone who sleeps in grime.

*PART 8: HOW TO CHOOSE EYE PRODUCTS THAT WON'T CAUSE THIS*

*Look for:*
- *Ophthalmologist tested*
- *Fragrance-free*
- *Oil-free* if you have blepharitis
- *Replace mascara every 3 months*

*Throw away:*
- Mascara over 3 months old
- Anything that smells weird
- Testers at stores

*PART 9: THE BIGGER PICTURE - SLEEP IS FOR REPAIR*

Your skin and eyes do 70% of their repair work between 10pm-2am.

When you sleep with makeup, you’re basically putting a plastic bag over your skin and saying "repair through this."

It can’t.

That’s why you wake up looking tired even when you slept 8 hours.

*PART 10: TALKING TO KIDS & TEENS ABOUT THIS*

Teens are the worst for sleeping in makeup after parties.

Instead of shaming: "That photo is scary but real. Sleeping in mascara can make your eyes itch and your lashes fall out. Can we set out makeup wipes by your bed?"

Make it easy, not gross.

*FINAL THOUGHT: THE PHOTO IS REAL, THE FEAR ISN'T*

Yes, that "worm" lives on you.
Yes, sleeping in makeup makes it worse.
No, you’re not going to go blind from one night.

The solution is boring: *Wash your face.*

Tonight: Take off your makeup. Your 40-year-old self will thank you.
Your eyelashes will thank you.
And you won’t wake up looking like the top photo ❤️
